IC 555 (NE555) Monostable / Bistable Timer
Product information:
These ICs are precision timing circuits capable of producing accurate time delays or oscillations.
In time-delay or monostable mode of operation, the timed interval is controlled by a single external resistor and capacitor network.
The 555 can be used as a multivibrator in three different ways:
Monostable multivibrator: the 555 gives only one pulse when triggered (Eng.: one-shot). This application can be recognized by the connection between pin 6 and pin 7 and the separate trigger input around pin 2 and is used, among other things, in timers.
Astable multivibrator: the 555 functions as an oscillator. The oscillator application can usually be recognized by the connection between pin 2 and pin 6 and the resistance between this point and pin 7 and that between pin 7 and VCC. Examples of the application are alarm systems and tone generators.
Bistable multivibrator: the 555 acts as a flip-flop. This circuit can usually be recognized by the absence of a capacitor between pin 2 and ground.
