The CD4050BE hex non-inverting buffer is ideal for level conversion, converting a high-level signal to a low-level signal while being powered from the low-level supply.

For example, 5V input signals can be downconverted to 3.3V signals. However, the 4050 can also be used as a buffer only without level conversion.

The output signal can never be higher than the power supply (Vcc) you put on the IC, even if the input signal is, for example, 16V.

The buffer of this chip is unidirectional. The input controls the output, the other way around does not work. This works for the SPI bus where the signals only go in 1 direction but not for I2C where signals on the same pin can go in 2 directions.
