Infrared Break Beam/Interruption Sensor - 3mm - Adafruit 2167

Product information:

The infrared break beam sensor allows you to check if an object passes between the two sensors.

On one side is an infrared sensor, on the other side an infrared receiver. If something passes between the sensor that does not let the invisible infrared light through, the receiver will let you know. Compared to PIR sensors, breakbeams are faster and you can use them more targeted.

The range of these 3mm LEDs is 25cm. The power supply is 3.3V or 5V. At 5V you will have a better range so we recommend that. The receiver is an open collector transistor output which means that you need to use a pull up resistor if you want to use it as a digital input. Most microcontrollers have the possibility to turn on a built-in pull-up resistor. Otherwise you can also put a 10K resistor between the white and red wire of the receiver. If you want to switch a relay or LED; you can switch up to 100mA.
