The 555 can be used in three different modes:

Monostable mode: the 555 functions as a "one-shot". This is used, among other things, in timers.
Astable mode: the 555 functions as an oscillator. This is used in alarm systems and tone generators.
Bistable mode: the 555 acts as a flip-flop.
