The Adafruit NeoPixels also come in a regular 8mm LED variant. This makes them breadboard-friendly with all the advantages that entails. Each LED looks exactly like a regular 8mm RGB LED with 4 legs, but instead of red/green/blue there is a small chip inside that drives the LED with high PWM speed with 24 bit colors.
Apply 5V to them and daisy chain them together by connecting the data out pin of one to the data in pin of the next in the chain. If you're using an Arduino you can use Adafruit's NeoPixel library to control them. The NeoPixels also work with the Adafruit Trinkets. Note that these LEDs are RGB instead of GRB like the 5050-sized LEDs you may be used to. Check out the NeoPixel example programs to see how you can automagically swap the colors.
